Mastering the 4 Essay Types

IELTS Writing Task 2 is worth 66% of your total Writing score. Learn the specific structure for each question type to guarantee a Band 7.0+.

Opinion Essay (Agree or Disagree)

In this essay, you must state a clear position and support it throughout. You can either completely agree, completely disagree, or take a balanced view.

Band 7+ Structure

  • Introduction: Paraphrase the question + Outline your opinion.
  • Body Para 1: First reason why you agree/disagree + Example.
  • Body Para 2: Second reason why you agree/disagree + Example.
  • Conclusion: Restate your opinion and summarize main points.
Practice Prompt:

"In many countries, plastic shopping bags are the main type of rubbish. They cause water and land pollution, so they should be banned. To what extent do you agree or disagree?"

Discussion Essay (Both Views)

You must discuss both sides of the argument mentioned in the prompt and then provide your own personal opinion.

Band 7+ Structure

  • Introduction: Paraphrase the question + State your opinion (briefly).
  • Body Para 1: Discuss the first view (the view you might disagree with).
  • Body Para 2: Discuss the second view (the view you agree with).
  • Conclusion: Summarize both sides and give a final clear opinion.
Practice Prompt:

"Some people think that it is best to work for the same organization for one's whole life. Others think that it is better to change jobs frequently. Discuss both views and give your opinion."

Problem and Solution Essay

This essay asks you to identify the causes of a specific issue and suggest practical solutions to overcome it.

Band 7+ Structure

  • Introduction: Paraphrase the question + Mention causes and solutions.
  • Body Para 1: Explain the 2 main causes/problems.
  • Body Para 2: Propose 2 specific solutions linked to the causes.
  • Conclusion: Summary of the problem and the importance of the solutions.
Practice Prompt:

"In many large cities, traffic congestion is a major problem. What are the causes of this, and what measures can be taken to reduce it?"

Advantages & Disadvantages

Identify the positive aspects (benefits) and the negative aspects (drawbacks) of a trend. Note if the prompt asks "Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?"

Band 7+ Structure

  • Introduction: Paraphrase the question + State your overall stance.
  • Body Para 1: Discuss the 2 main advantages.
  • Body Para 2: Discuss the 2 main disadvantages.
  • Conclusion: Summarize and state which side is stronger.
Practice Prompt:

"Nowadays, more and more people are using online banking. Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?"
